Why Fresh Is Best

Why Fresh Is Best

A little-known fact that not everyone may know is, that when it comes to certain ingredients, the freshness of that ingredient really does matter.

When choosing ingredients for your skin be mindful that some may oxidize over time.

Have you ever had a product that changes colour?  Maybe it was clear when you invested in it and by the time you’re finished, it is a darker colour.  This could be caused by oxidation. Some ingredients that are incredibly beneficial to your skin, like vitamin C in the most bioavailable form being L-ascorbic acid, are an example of this.

L-ascorbic acid is a proven winner as a skin care ingredient offering a multitude of benefits, including collagen stimulation and antioxidant protection. Unfortunately, when exposed to light and air it will begin to oxidize. When it oxidizes to the point that it is either;

  • Dark yellow
  • Amber
  • Brown

It no longer has the wonderful benefits to the skin.

Oxidation is not our friend; however, there is a way to help minimize that from occurring.

  1. Source out a fresh form of L-ascorbic acid that has not had the opportunity to oxidize before you even open it.
  2. Look for a bottle that is amber in colour to help protect from UV.
  3. Source out a serum that is not meant to last for three to four months in one single bottle. The more you open over time, the more air is introduced to the formula providing a perfect environment for oxidation.

One of the ways that AlumierMD has addressed this concern to deliver you the freshest, most efficacious L-ascorbic acid is to actually keep the L-ascorbic acid separate from the serum until you are ready to activate that bottle. Thus, giving it no chance to oxidize while sitting in the bottle on the shelf.

The Power of C

So we are all taught that getting A’s in school is the best right? However, we are here to say there is nothing wrong with a C as well, as long as you did your personal best. This can be applied to both your grades and your chosen actives in your skincare routine.

When it comes to your skin choosing a Vitamin C is a part of doing your best for your skin. Collagen is a major part of our skin and its health very much reflects a youthful skin. Collagen is what gives your body and in our case our skin structure, strength, and firmness. Here is the cruel truth as we age from maturity forward we lose approximately 1% of our collagen per year. So, what are we going to do about it?

Enter Vitamin C or more specifically L Ascorbic Acid which is the form of Vitamin C that our skin can utilize most effectively. We all have Vitamin C in our bodies and it is a major factor in our health. L Ascorbic Acid is essential for collagen production and therefore a healthy, youthful skin.

Phew, challenge solved!

Not so quick. One would automatically think ok I am going to take more Vitamin C however applying it to your skin is 20 times more effective than taking it orally.

Enter the next word that starts with C, Clear.

It is important that your Vitamin C (L Ascorbic Acid) be clear to light straw colour to be most effective. L Ascorbic Acid is not only beneficial for maintaining healthy collagen but also a great anti-oxidant.

Anti-oxidants help defend against free radicals that are the little thieves of healthy skin. If you need a reminder there is a previous post all about them and why they are not our friends.

So back to the word clear.

When L Ascorbic Acid is not clear to light straw colour it actually stops working as an anti-oxidant. Always search out a clear formula for sure.
AlumierMD has taken great effort to ensure that you will always have a clear and fresh formula with their newly launched EverActive C&E®.

This formula allows you complete control to activate when you are ready to use your serum, so the L Ascorbic Acid will never start to oxidize while sitting on the shelf waiting to be purchased.

With Vitamin C in the form of L Ascorbic Acid, we want to not only promote healthy collagen but also want anti-oxidant support.  The benefits do not stop there though. Vitamin C helps to brighten the skin by targeting pigmentation and also has anti-inflammatory benefits for the skin as well.

Vitamin C is clearly a great choice for all skin types and skin conditions.
